Special Enrollment Period for Healthcare Plans

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, a Special Enrollment Period for individuals and families to apply and enroll in a healthcare plan has been established. From Feb. 15, 2021 to May 15, 2021, Marketplaces using the HealthCare.gov platform will open to all Marketplace-eligible consumers who are submitting a new application or updating an existing application. This will allow many Americans who remain uninsured or underinsured to gain access to needed health coverage.

How to get started

To take advantage of this opportunity, you can access the Special Enrollment Period through a number of channels, including HealthCare.gov directly, the Marketplace call center, or direct enrollment channels. You can also work with a network of over 50,000 agents and brokers who are registered with the Marketplace.

You can find out if you are eligible to take advantage of this Special Enrollment Period by visiting HealthCare.gov or calling the Marketplace call center.

How the Special Enrollment Period works

If you are eligible and enroll in a plan under this Special Enrollment Period, you can select a plan with coverage that starts prospectively the first of the month after plan selection. You have 30 days after submitting your application to choose a plan.

Additionally, if you are currently enrolled in a healthcare plan through the Marketplace, you have the opportunity to change to any available plan in your area without being restricted to the same level of coverage as your current plan. To do so, review your existing application and make any updates to your current information, then submit your application to receive an updated eligibility result that provides the Special Enrollment Period before continuing on to enrollment. You will not need to answer any new application questions or provide any new information not otherwise required to determine eligibility and enroll in coverage. You also do not need to worry about providing any documentation of a qualifying event, which is typically required during a Special Enrollment Period.
